Rivers and streams in this region rise rapidly during periods of heavy rain – crossing unbridged rivers and streams in these conditions, is extremely hazardous. Be prepared to wait.
- Dart Track has reopened – be aware the new sections are narrow and sometimes steep.
- Upper Rees Valley – obey all ‘no stopping’ zones in the upper Rees Valley and exercise extreme caution when crossing avalanche paths.
- Rees Saddle – care required.
- 25 Mile Hut in the Rees Valley has been removed. The derelict hut was on private property and camping at the old site is not permitted.
CASCADE SADDLE ROUTE
- Patches of Ice and snow present between Pylon and Cascade Saddle – care required
SUGARLOAF/ROCKBURN TRACK
- Rockburn Hut has been removed due to severe storm damage and will not be replaced. There is a camp shelter and toilet nearby, owned by Dart River Jet Safaris, that is available for public use.
- Rockburn/Sylvan connection – major treefall and track damage
- Rockburn/Theatre Flat Track – some treefall and track damage
FIRE SEASON
Otago Lakes District: OPEN FIRE SEASON.
Mt Aspiring National Park: RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON.

- Several slips between the Greenstone/Caples confluence and Mid Caples Hut – navigate with care during poor weather.
TE ARAROA TRAIL
- CLOSED from Princhester Road/SH94 to Mararoa Station bridge, due to river erosion. Follow the road for 2.5km.
- MAVORA WALKWAY
• Boundary hut – No water and no fireplace
• Taipo & Careys huts – No water
