Journey into the World Heritage area of Mount Aspiring National Park and walk through ancient beech forest. Lake Sylvan offers good forest walking that breaks out into the open and gives great views of the mountains. The track is located in the Routeburn Valley and begins with a swing bridge crossing over the Routeburn River. This well-defined track leads through old moraine river terraces and very tall red beech forest to the picturesque perched alpine lake, home to brown trout and numerous small native fish. We return via the 1920’s tramline loop which passes through the regenerating beech, where relics of the early logging days can be viewed. Keep a special eye out for the endangered yellowhead/mōhua, which is the subject of the Department of Conservation’s Operation Ark.
This is an easy well-defined track suitable for all fitness levels.
